Climbing hydrangea is an elegant vine with glossy green leaves and lacy white flowers in June. Useful for adding interest to walls, trees, and chimneys. Growers should provide support at the potting time. Also known as Hydrangea anomala subsp. petiolaris and Hydrangea petiolaris; H. anomala is the currently accepted name.

General Care

 

Soil Moist, well-drained soils are best; mulch is beneficial.

Pruning is not generally required; prune selectively as needed to keep the plant within desired application. Blooms on old wood; cutting back or shearing before bloom will remove flowers.

Uses Specimen; trellis; woodland garden

Growing Tips Climbing hydrangeas are generally slow to establish, but will be vigorous once they are. Climbs by rootlets; provide strong support. Flower color is not affected by soil pH.
