Sweet & Simple: The Best Hummingbird Food Recipe

Hummingbirds are among the most beautiful of birds, and they can provide a great source of joy to any bird lover. Watching these tiny creatures' flit from flower to flower is a sight that never gets old. If you want to take your love for hummingbirds one step further, why not try creating your own hummingbird food? It's easier than you think!

Here’s the recipe for the best hummingbird food around.

What You’ll Need • 4 cups of water

• ¼ cup of granulated white sugar (make sure it is pure cane sugar)

• A medium-sized saucepan with a lid

• A small funnel (optional)

• An empty 16oz. hummingbird feeder bottle (or two 8 oz bottles if desired).

Instructions

1. Bring 4 cups of water to a boil in the saucepan on medium heat. Once boiling, reduce heat and add sugar slowly while stirring continuously until completely dissolved. Do not overheat or boil too vigorously as this will create large bubbles that could clog up your feeder tubes when pouring in later steps.

2. Remove pan from heat and allow the mixture to cool down before transferring it into the hummingbird feeder bottle(s). To avoid making a mess, you can use a funnel if desired. Make sure that all parts of the feeder are tightly secured before hanging outside!

3. Hang your homemade hummingbird food near plants and flowers so that it can attract local birds. You might even get lucky enough to see some activity within minutes! The mixture should last about two weeks if kept away from direct sunlight but be sure to change out old nectar for new every two weeks or so in order to keep your neighborhood birds healthy and happy!
